Our Week in the Forest
This week at Little Forest Folk Winkworth has been full of autumn fun as we’ve embraced the wild and windy weather. We started our week illuminating the darker mornings and evenings in our forest with all the colours of Diwali! The children ventured out for all the excitement and laughter of a big rain walk adventure. On the way, we discovered autumn leaves in red, orange, yellow, green and brown. And of course the children immediately found Winkworth’s biggest puddle. The splashes were high and the smiles were wide. We returned to a cosy afternoon of lantern making to light up the evening before pick up time.
The next day saw our first autumn fire circle to celebrate world apple day. The children helped arrange the kindling and practiced with flint and steel to light the fire before growing it bigger and bigger with their dragon breaths. Nearby, busy children chopped apples to put on the fire to stew. Around the forest, apples whizzed down tubes in our apple rolling competition and beautiful artwork was made with apple halves painted in greens and reds. We topped that all off with a delicious apple crumble made with the apples cooked on our fire. Yum!
The forest Olympics arrived the following day with great fanfare! The children navigated our biggest obstacle course yet with great skills and concentration. We also practiced our hand eye coordination, tossing our letter bean bags through the olympic hoops. Some enterprising children even tried to squeeze through themselves! Circles were the theme of the day with circle printing in Olympic colours and circle tracing round cups and plates to make our own rings.
We have ended the week celebrating our achievements with some medal making. With our bow saw, the children have painstakingly sawn out their own wood cookies and painted them gold. Well done forest school champions!
